First Time to Camp?

First Time to Leadership Camp? Look no further, here’s all you need to know about what this camp is all about!

A Day at Leadership Camp

The leadership camps are specifically structured for the emerging professional youth within the community and are designed to cultivate and empower the youth to be leaders of the future. Bearing this in mind, a typical day at the Leadership camp is as follows:

The morning begins with a yoga session to increase your flexibility, both mentally and physically to keep you fresh, which is important especially if you’re working long hours already. Although the session is optional, it’s proven quite popular with camp participants because of its relaxing effects.

After awakening the body and mind, breakfast is served. This is an excellent opportunity to meet new people, or network with, other young like-minded Sikh youth. Breakfast consists of the traditional cereal selections and toast, as well as what the centre staff have prepared for the morning.

Having completed breakfast, the camp moves onto the spiritual element and everybody participates in an uplifting session of the Japji and Naam Simran. The peace and serenity from the session, which is starkly different to the hustle and bustle of day-to-day life, is refreshing and rejuvenating.

After these sessions, the real core of the camp begins with the sessions from top calibre facilitators. The facilitators give a bit of background, explain how they have got where they are, what has driven them, the lessons they have learnt along the way and what participants need to do to be successful too! Previous facilitators have spoken about their experiences during the Gulf war, others have spoken about opening or running successful businesses.

At this point the activity designed for camp is revealed to the participants. The activities are designed as business problems, eg pitching an idea for a television show, or designing and pitching a product to Venture Capitalists. The experience gained from participating in the workshop is invaluable, and skills learnt are transferrable to daily employment. To sweeten the deal, the winner of the camp activity wins a prize. Previous winners have won tickets to the finale of the contender Asia (Ebay - $1000 each).

Lunch is served, and again provides an excellent networking opportunity. Lunch food is what the staff has prepared. Pizza lovers will be happy.

The afternoon prayers are then performed. Rehras Sahib and more Naam Simran to ease the mind from an already intense day and to give you a breather for the final sessions of the day.

The evening session occasionally has a surprise guest that provides further invaluable insight into the wide world of employment,. In the past we’ve had a senior Telstra Executive who gave a very informative presentation to participants about corporate success.

The night is rounded off with time for groups to work on their workshops/presentations and have dinner.

Lights out and rest up for next day!
